Faucets come in many styles, and there are 4 different types of faucets in use throughout bathrooms and kitchens across the country. Determining which type of faucet you have will help with any repairs you may need to perform.

Types of Faucet

  • Ball – Ball faucets are very common in kitchens, and were the first type of faucet to not use a washer. They can be identified by the single handle which rotates over a rounded cap directly above the base of the faucet. The handle operates a plastic or metal ball inside the body of the faucet. This ball has slots in its surface, and spring-loaded seals which determine the flow and temperature of the water as its location changes within the faucet’s body. The number of parts in a ball faucet leave them more susceptible to leaking than most other washerless faucets.
  • Disc – Disc faucets use an internal mixing chamber (known as a pressure balance cartridge) within the body of the faucet. These are the newest faucets on the market, and they are very reliable and durable, requiring little maintenance. The flow of water is controlled by two ceramic plates at the bottom of the faucet body, which raise and lower as the flow of water is adjusted via the handle.

Double-handle cartridge faucets look identical to many compression faucets. In a compression faucet, the handle must be securely tightened to restrict water flow, while this is more smooth and consistent with a cartridge faucet, which doesn’t require added pressure to stanch the flow of water.
  • Compression – Compression faucets are the oldest style of faucet, and among the first type ever used. Since the beginning of indoor, on-demand plumbing, compression faucets have been the chief method of delivery. While they are the simplest to construct and the least expensive to purchase, they are prone to leaks and require routine maintenance. The temperature is adjusted via the separate
